CEDAR CITY — A 24-year-old man suspected of driving while impaired was arrested early Friday following a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 15 in northern Iron County.
Shortly after 1:30 a.m., a Utah Highway Patrol trooper was dispatched to the scene of a reported crash of a pickup truck on southbound I-15 near mile marker 95, where state Route 20 connects to the interstate.
The trooper arrived to find the driver outside the vehicle, which had reportedly rolled off the right side of the roadway. The man, who told troopers he had been alone in the truck, was identified by his Nevada driver license as Alexis Calderon, the arresting trooper wrote in the probable cause statement.
“I made sure Alexis was OK and then asked him for his driver license and insurance information,” the trooper wrote. “While Alexis was digging in his truck for his documents I was able to smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the car. l was also able to see a beer can on the passenger seat.”
After troopers performed multiple field sobriety tests, Calderon was taken to Parowan Police Department for a breath test, which indicated a blood alcohol level of .070, according to the affidavit.
Additionally, another trooper found an open container inside the vehicle with a small amount of alcohol left in it, along with a vape pen allegedly containing THC.
No injuries were reported. Although Calderon was evaluated by medical personnel at the scene he was not transported to the hospital via ambulance, UHP said.
Shortly before 5 a.m. Friday, Calderon was booked into Iron County Jail on suspicion of multiple misdemeanor charges, including DUI, having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle and possession of drugs and paraphernalia, in addition to the infraction of failing to travel within a single lane.
This report is based on statements from court documents and law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
