It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Barbara Dorothy Patricia Olson, at the age of 90, on April 16, 2024, in her apartment at The Retreat at Sunbrook. Barbara, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, was born to the late George and Elizabeth Taylor on a scenic farm in Saskatchewan, Canada.
There, she cherished her early years alongside her elder brothers, engaging in memorable activities such as tending to animals, helping with the harvests, and exploring vast, open fields. Barbara also enjoyed her school days there, fondly recalling how she rode her horse to school each day — an experience that deepened her appreciation for the outdoors and her sense of adventure.
Barbara’s zest for life and love of dance saw her through the vibrant dance halls of British Columbia after marrying Ben Geck in the early 1950s. It was there that Barbara’s family blossomed with the arrival of her three sons, bringing her life abundant joy and energy. During her time in British Columbia, she dedicated many years as the city of Golden’s bookkeeper. While working for the city of Golden, she pursued her education, earning a degree in Business Management from the University of British Columbia. The family made a significant move to the United States in 1968, seeking new adventures and opportunities. For the next 15 years, she and Ben would own and operate a successful exploration drilling business. While Ben was in the field supervising workers and drills, Barbara was managing the office and books.
Years later, Barbara found love again with Dick Olson, whom she met in St. George, Utah, through their mutual love of golf. They married in 1996 and spent many happy years together, traveling the U.S. in their camper with their dogs, playing golf at any course they could find, and enjoying visits with family spread out around the United States and Canada. Barbara and Dick settled in Green Valley, Arizona, where they continued to play golf daily, and Barbara became an accomplished bridge player. Known among her peers as a formidable competitor, she was feared and respected in the bridge community for her strategic acumen at the card table.
Eventually, Barbara and Dick settled in Ivins, Utah, to be closer to their family. They enjoyed a tranquil life filled with shared hobbies and enduring companionships.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents George and Elizabeth Taylor; her brothers Jack, Stan, Roy and Teddy; her beloved husbands Ben Geck and Dick Olson; and her son Brett Geck. She is survived by her sons Barry Geck and Wayne (Candice) Geck; stepdaughters Deb Skupien and Jennifer (Bill) Kersch; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Barbara leaves behind a legacy rich with love and dedication, which will endure through her large and loving family and the many lives she touched with her vibrant spirit and nurturing heart.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 16, at 10 a.m. at the Ivins City Cemetery 200 W. 400 N. Ivins, Utah.
