The incident, which was reported shortly after 8 p.m., involved a white Hyundai Tucson SUV with a male driver as its only occupant.

Cedar City Police Sgt. Bryan Moore said the vehicle was southbound on Main Street when drifted off the right side of the road, went into some landscaping and crashed head-on into a utility pole, snapping it in two.

Moore said the driver may have experienced some sort of medical condition that caused him to lose control of the vehicle. He was transported via private vehicle to Cedar City Hospital for evaluation, Moore added.

“It’s surprising that he didn’t have more injuries,” Moore said. “Luckily, he had a seat belt on and the airbags deployed properly.”

Although late-night traffic in the area was very light, a number of vehicles had to be detoured around the scene, which was in front of Rainbow Sign and Design at 451 N. Main Street.

“We did have to divert a few diesel trucks down Coal Creek because of the low-hanging wires,” Moore added.

Shortly after 9 p.m., tow truck operators were working to remove the vehicle from the landscaping as utility crews used a crane and a bucket truck to stabilize the broken pole and remove it so it could be replaced and the lines repaired.

By 11 p.m., utility crews had replaced the broken pole with a new one but were still doing other repair work.

This report is based on statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
