Nestled within a quiet neighborhood in the Southgate/Tonaquint area, Beehive Cottages offers affordable independent living with personal care. It’s the perfect place for seniors who aren’t yet ready for assisted living to relieve themselves of the burden of homeownership and enjoy a more comfortable, convenient lifestyle in their golden years.

“You can move in and not have to worry about anything,” administrator Maurie Simons said. “Everything’s taken care of.”

At Beehive Cottages, residents don’t have to deal with long hallways or elevators to access their homes. Each of the deluxe one- and two-bedroom units features a private entrance; a full kitchen with granite countertops and a dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator and stove; a washer and dryer; a private porch and patio; and an enclosed garage with storage. Utilities and cable TV are included, as well as an 24/7 emergency response system for added peace of mind.

Beehive Cottages is a pet-friendly community, and many of the units have fenced backyards. All 34 cottages are located on a meticulously landscaped cul-de-sac, which keeps traffic to a minimum. Visitors can park in the driveway and be just steps away from the front door.

“With only 34 cottages, people don’t get lost in the shuffle,” Simons said. “It’s a very close-knit community.”

Residents enjoy nutritious meals, along with activities and entertainment, at the community center. Seniors are encouraged to maintain an active lifestyle with free membership to a local health club and transportation to the club three times per week. Beehive Cottages also offers a full-service beauty salon and barbershop.

Locally owned and operated by a hands-on team, Beehive Cottages provides a busy calendar of social and recreational programs along with weekly housekeeping and linen services and weekly physical therapy. Residents who no longer feel safe driving can stay connected with scheduled personal transportation and organized group excursions.

All of these amenities and more are wrapped up into one convenient, all-inclusive monthly price. There are no add-ons and never any hidden fees or charges.

“People can actually live here for less than trying to maintain a home themselves,” owner Dan Steurer said. “This is a safe and cost-effective solution for being able to socialize, eat properly and have people take care of the cleaning, maintenance and more. Most of the people who come here start thriving again.”

Diane Miller, who recently moved into Beehive Cottages, was seeking a respite from her grief and solitude after her husband died. It didn’t take long for her to find a sense of community.

“The very first day, when I went over to the dining room, everyone greeted me and said hello and they pulled their chairs out at the table, and I felt like I was home,” she said. “I appreciate the people, and they have looked after me ever since. I am truly happy.”

“One of the things I like the most about living in the Beehive Cottages is how we as residents take care of each other,” added Beverly Wilkinson, another resident. “There is such a love and such a friendship here that I have never felt before in my life, and you always know that you’re not alone even if you’re living alone.”

Beehive Cottages is Southern Utah’s independent living division of BeeHive Homes, best known as a trusted provider of assisted living and memory care services in over 200 communities nationwide.

Steurer designed and built Beehive Cottages in 2009 to benefit local seniors like his mother and mother-in-law, both of whom were in their late 80s when they moved in. While unable to live alone safely, they also didn’t need the round-the-clock care of an assisted living facility. Independent living was the perfect solution.

“We’re different from everyone else, and seeing is believing,” Steurer said. “You just need to bring the things you love; we’ll provide everything else.”
