“BYOUL|NORRI,” an innovative and internationally inspired production, seamlessly blends elements of live Pansori song (Korean folk opera) by Pansori expert Melody Sim, original electronic beats performed onstage by award-winning musician Daniel Corral, irregular folk rhythms, Hangul (the Korean alphabet system) and chance operation.

Through deconstruction, reinterpretation and transformation of classical Korean dance, Jung presents a mesmerizing hour-long concert in two parts: Byoul (), meaning “star,” featuring a solo performance by the choreographer herself, and Norri (놀이), meaning “play,” a four-part ensemble work.

“‘BYOUL|NORRI’ received a National Dance Project award from the New England Foundation for the Arts and has performed for audiences across the country,” commented Miranda Wright, executive director of the Center for the Arts at Kayenta. “It is a true honor to be able to host this exceptional project in Southern Utah, and to invite these internationally recognized artists to our community.”

Jung’s choreography transcends boundaries, connecting different times and spaces across cultures and geographies. Her work has garnered critical acclaim for redefining the principles, forms, structures and functions of Korean classical and folk dance in multicultural settings.

Jung holds a Master of Fine Arts in choreography from the University of California, Los Angeles, where she was honored with the Westfield Emerging Artist Award. Prior to her solo career, she performed extensively in Asia and Europe as a dancer with the Gyeonggi Provincial Dance Company, known for its traditional and contemporary Korean dance repertoire. Additionally, Jung showcased her talent as a main actress in Tokebi Storm, a rhythmic physical theater group, captivating audiences worldwide with Korean-style drumming and dance in over 1,000 performances.
