Norman H. Schiffman, 90, of Washington, Utah, died Jan. 28, 2024, at Southern Utah Veterans Home due to natural causes.
He was born July 31, 1933, to Melvin Owen Schiffman and Gladys Allsop in Smithfield, Utah. He grew up, mostly in the Smithfield and Logan area. The family moved for a time to Mesa, Arizona, where he went to high school.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps when he was 17 years old and served during the Korean War. He proudly served as a Marine and was honorably discharged.
On Aug. 13, 1955, he married Carol Kinnear. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple.
Norm and Carol were the parents of six children, three sons and three daughters. He was always up for an adventure, trips to Disneyland, drives up to Jackson Hole, and Yellowstone are some of our favorite memories. Summers were spent boating with trips to Lake Powell. Recently trips up through Zion were his favorite.
He was a faithful member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings, but one of his favorites was serving as a Stake Missionary with his wife Carol as his companion.
He was employed in the trucking industry for much of his career. He finished his career with Idaho National Laboratories in Idaho Falls, Idaho. His career took him and his family from Utah to Idaho to the mountains of Colorado then back to Idaho, where he retired. He was instrumental in computerizing the trucking industry.
When Carol passed away in 2001, Norm reconnected with an old high school friend Beverley Cooper. They were married March 19, 2002, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. For 18 years, they had a wonderful life in Washington, Utah. They were active members of the Washington Fields 6th ward. Beverley passed away in August 2020.
Norm kept himself busy with his many hobbies and talents. He was an amazing artist and a master craftsman of custom rifles and knives. He was a jack of all trades and a master of all. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do and he did everything exceptionally well. He was 100% self-taught and shared his talents with everyone around him. He is survived by his children Mike, Curt (Cheryl), Matt (Laura), Christy Baird (Mark), Carol Ann Ryan (Cameron). His sister Letha Sue Clay, Brother Mel Schiffman and many nieces and nephews who adored him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, both wives, daughter Lorie, daughter-in-law Leslie and grandson Matthew Schiffman.
A memorial service will be held this Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Washington Fields sixth ward building. 1835 S. Washington Fields Rd., Washington, Utah. Visitation from 12:45 -1:15 p.m., followed by the service at 1:30 p.m. Full military honors will be given.
