ST. GEORGE — We’re back to highlighting exceptional student-athletes throughout Southern Utah with all new episodes of “Performance Player of the Month.”

This month’s episode features Snow Canyon High School basketball star Owen Mackay. Devin Dixon with The Fan Sports Network and St. George News Sports joined him on his home court to catch up.

Now a senior at Snow Canyon, Mackay’s career highlights include winning state as a sophomore and receiving All-State honors twice, including 4A Player of the Year for the 2022-23 season.

Mackay believes his game has been shaped and elevated by the players around him throughout his high school career. He’s currently leading Utah’s 4A division in average points scored per game, with 24.

“The past couple of years, I’d have to let the game come to me and that’s how I scored some of my buckets, but this year was a little different in the sense that I have to create a little bit more for myself,” he said.

Mackay’s younger brother Reggie, a sophomore, also joined Snow Canyon’s varsity team this season. Playing alongside his brother has only strengthened their relationship, he said.

“It’s been fun to coach him and learn from him. It’s been a huge blessing.”

Mackay counts his grandpa, who has been one of his biggest supporters over the years, as his role model. His favorite athlete is Steven Adams, a New Zealander who currently plays center for the Houston Rockets.

“Sometimes I go on YouTube and I look up, like, good sportsmanship videos in the NBA and Steven Adams is always the guy in those videos,” he said. “So I just think that’s pretty cool.”

Mackay has been called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rome, Italy, right after graduating this spring. He has also committed to stay local and play for Utah Tech University when he returns home.
