Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden told St. George News the incident, reported shortly before 7 a.m., involved a white GMC Sierra pickup truck and a silver Buick Regal on state Route 7 near the Sand Hollow overpass.

At the time of the incident, the Buick was heading west on SR-7 and was in the process of passing a slower vehicle using the eastbound lane. It reportedly struck the Sierra approximately 1,000 feet from the overpass. The impact destroyed the front of the truck and crushed the side of the Buick.

The crash reportedly severely damaged the driver’s side door of the Buick, trapping the driver, who was then extricated from the mangled wreckage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Roden said the truck’s driver sustained moderately severe injuries while the passenger had minor injuries. Both were transported to St. George Regional Hospital by ambulance. The driver of the Buick sustained minor injuries in the crash and was not transported to the hospital.

Roden said the crash initially closed both sides of the highway, but after about 45 minutes, the eastbound side was reopened for travel, while westbound traffic was diverted off the highway at the off-ramp for more than an hour. SR-7 has since reopened in both directions.

The Buick’s driver was later cited for improper passing and unsafe lane travel, Roden said.

The Utah Highway Patrol, the Hurricane Valley Fire District, the Hurricane Police Department, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington City Police Department responded and tended to the scene.

This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
