Region 9 girls golf: Cedar takes top honors at SunRiver

ST. GEORGE — The Cedar Reds won their second straight Region 9 girls golf match on Thursday.

Playing at SunRiver Golf Club in St. George, the Reds posted a team score of 346. They were led by RaeLee Johnson’s 83, with teammate Taylyn Wilson right behind with an 84. Rounding out Cedar’s top four scores were Denym Bohn with a 90 and Breelle Evans with a 91.

“Wow! Our team really stepped up their game today, with five of our players making the top 10,” Cedar head coach Laycee Johnson told St. George News afterward. “Their dedication and hard work is really paying off by putting up great scores.”

The Dixie Flyers, led by Stacie Phelps’s 88, finished second overall with 381 strokes.

Coming in third place at 392 strokes were the Pine View Panthers, who were led by senior Alyssa Butterfus’s score of 83. Butterfus incurred a four-stroke penalty that she called on herself after discovering an extra club in her bag on the second hole.

“It cost her the win, but I’m more proud of her for this than any of her other wins,” said Pine View coach Matt Wieland. “She’s amazing.”

The top individual score of the day was by Brynlee Bandley of Crimson Cliffs, who finished with an 80. The Mustangs, who scored 400 to take fourth, played without star sophomore Kate Walker, who was playing in a Utah Junior Golf Association tour event elsewhere in St. George (Walker shot a 75 at that tournament, which wraps up with another 18 holes on Friday at Southgate).

Next week’s Region 9 match will be on Wednesday, April 17 at Green Spring Golf Course in Washington City.
