ST. GEORGE — A southern Utah man accused of choking his terminally ill wife nearly two years ago in an effort to end her pain is now facing a serious criminal charge.

DeWayne McCulla, 45, was charged Wednesday in 5th District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony. Arenda Lee McCulla, 47, died on Dec. 21, 2021, of breast cancer.

McCulla was on hospice for terminal cancer. But on the night of Dec. 20, 2021, six family members say DeWayne McCulla “choked the victim in an attempt to kill her to ease her suffering while they were with her during her terminal cancer and being on hospice,” according to charging documents.

The McCullas were living in La Verkin, Washington County, at the time. A La Verkin police officer called DeWayne McCulla to get his version of what happened.
