ST. GEORGE — Six athletes from Southern Utah University have extended their track and field season for at least another week and will compete at the NCAA Western Regional at the University of Arkansas Wednesday-Saturday, May 22-25.

Qualifiers and their events are as follows:

Jaedyn Carpenter – 400-meter dash
Dylan Gibson – 400-meter dash
Travis Feeny – 5,000-meter run
Hayden Harward – 3,000-meter steeplechase
Rebecca Hazelet – hammer throw
Bronis MacDougall – javelin

“Qualifying for the first round of the NCAA is quite an accomplishment,” SUU coach Eric House said in a news release. “My hope is that they can perform at the level that got them there so they have a shot at the National Championship.”

Competition will begin on Wednesday with the men’s hammer throw at 9 a.m. Mountain Time and conclude with the women’s 4×400-meter relay at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday.

MacDougall will kick things off for the Thunderbirds in the javelin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, and Gibson and Carpenter will finish the day with the 400 at 6:25 p.m.

On Thursday, Hazelet will look to advance in the hammer throw at 9 a.m., and both Feeny and Harward will wrap up competition on Friday with Harward tackling the steeplechase at 4:40 p.m. and Feeny competing in the 5,000 at 7:10 p.m.

According to the news release, some of the top highlights from the record-breaking season include Harward’s 8:39.24 in the steeplechase to improve his school record in the event and MacDougall’s 211 feet, 3.7 inches, in the javelin to qualify for the Canadian Olympic Trials.
