WASHINGTON CITY — Those who live in the city and enjoy walking for exercise have regained access to a popular tunnel that was closed due to freeway construction in the area.

According to a media release from the Utah Department of Transportation, the pedestrian crossing under Interstate 15 to Boilers Park is now open to the public.

Construction crews completed primary work needed to accommodate the new Exit 11 interchange that will give I-15 travelers the option to exit the freeway onto Main Street in Washington City.

“As construction on I-15 continues, short, intermittent closures of the underpass may be needed to accommodate work,” transportation officials said. “The latest closure information will be posted on the project website.”

The Boilers Park was opened in 2020, as previously reported by St. George News.

Once fenced off from the public and overgrown with vegetation, the natural spring popularly known as “the Boilers” transformed from a potential community hazard to a park and conservation garden.

“We are excited to have this pedestrian walkway open, which will facilitate easier access to our beautiful Boilers Park,” Jordan Hess, Washington City public affairs specialist, said. “Residents on the south side of I-15 can easily take advantage of this beautiful amenity and desert garden.”

The tunnel at Boilers Park is also a great path for those roaming the town on foot to access the other side of the interstate safely, Hess noted.

UDOT officials said that Washington City’s Main Street between 400 North and Buena Vista Boulevard remains closed as crews continue to excavate the road and shape the embankments along the northbound and southbound exit ramps.

“Additionally, crews continue to work on the storm drains in the project area and plan to begin pouring curb and gutter along Main Street and Buena Vista Boulevard next week,” the release states. “For the safety of our crews and the traveling public, please use caution, slow down and follow all construction signage when driving through the work zone on I-15.”

Transportation officials said the sidewalk closure near Sky at Brio Apartments is still in effect until further notice.
