ST. GEORGE — Results are beginning to roll in from Utah’s general election, with the results for the special election of the state’s state’s 2nd congressional district coming in first. Elsewhere within and without the district, municipal election results are arriving gradually.
In this file photo, (L-R) Celeste Maloy and state Sen. Kathleen Riebe, the Republican and Democrat candidates running for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District in a special election, answer questions at Utah Tech University, St. George, Utah, Nov. 7, 2023 | Photo by Mori Kessler, St. George News
Vying for Congress are Republican Celeste Maloy and Democrat Sen. Kathleen Riebe, along with five third-party or independent candidates.
The Associated Press declared Maloy the victor in the special congressional race after 9 p.m.
On the local level, several municipalities may gain new faces on their respective councils while likely retaining some old faces and incumbents.
In addition to the congressional and municipal races, St. George residents will be able to vote on the adoption of a new $25 million general obligation bond aimed at funding the city’s trails, parks and general recreation-based projects over the next 25 years. While the bond is valued at $25 million, debt repayment is estimated to run over $40 million with the interest attached.
As of 9:15 p.m. the recreation-based bond appears to have passed with nearly 60% of the vote.
While the special general election is considered closed Tuesday night, post-audit elections of the results will be held in Iron and Washington counties on Nov. 28 and Dec. 1 respectively. The official canvass – or final, official vote total – is slated to be reviewed and voted on by their respective County Commissions on Dec. 5.
Results will be updated as they come in from state and county sources, with a full report published on St. George News on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
