Mike Pondoyo, public information officer for Santa Clara-Ivins Police, told St. George News the crash occurred near the Center Street roundabout in Ivins at approximately 7:30 a.m.

Eyewitnesses reported that the woman driving the vehicle was eastbound when she appeared to lose control and veer into the median, which caused the car to hit a boulder and roll onto its top, Pondoyo said.

The woman was fortunate that an off-duty Life Flight medical professional happened to witness the crash, Pondoyo said.

“I guess he was on his way to work,” he said. “He was the first one on the scene, helping out, talking with the driver.”

Pondoyo then arrived at the scene and shut down traffic from 100 East and 200 West, diverting traffic. The road was closed for about an hour.

Santa Clara-Ivins Fire & Rescue responded to the scene and used the Jaws of Life to extricate the woman from the vehicle. She was then transported to St. George Regional Hospital, Pondoyo said.

Pondoyo said she was wearing her seat belt and no citations were issued, though the crash is still under investigation.

This report is based on statements from police and may not contain the full scope of findings.
