On Thursday, Jan. 11, a new moon at 20 degrees Capricorn will be the first of two new moons in Capricorn this year. Essentially, the year begins with a new moon in Capricorn and ends the year with a new moon in Capricorn, which indicates that this year is all about goal-driven change.

The cardinal earth sign of Capricorn is symbolized by the mountain goat, who stops at nothing to climb to the top. Capricorn is tenacious, resourceful and ambitious — but also practical. Natives with strong Capricorn energy don’t believe in dreams or miracles; they know that manifesting a desired reality requires hard work, time and a commitment to the process.

Amping this transformational influence, this new moon forms a harmonious trine to Uranus in Taurus. Uranus, the planet of unpredictability, revolution and change, charges this new moon with innovation, pushing us to try something different and leave behind outdated behaviors and perceptions.

In the sign of Capricorn, this new moon also highlights the areas of life Pluto has been transiting since January 2008. Pluto, the planet of transformation and the death-rebirth cycle, takes action. What needs to go, Pluto will destroy. Its purpose is to propel us to evolve at the soul level.

Also on Thursday, Jupiter and Mars form an ultra-harmonious aspect, amping the lunar energy with optimism, confidence and luck.

If all that wasn’t enough, this new moon creates a square aspect to the karmic nodes, which presents a type of crossroads. The South Node represents a comfort zone, while the North Node urges us to break away from comfort to accomplish what we came here to do. These are not cosmic bodies but points of destiny.

So what does all of this mean for you? Find out below.

Aries
March 21-April 19

The new year began with a focus on your career and public persona, dear Aries, and this new moon highlights this area, bringing a positive boost to implement changes that will elevate you to the next level. For some, this could bring about a realization that the career path you’re on is not quite right, or that you are ready to step into a leadership position. Or perhaps you’re realizing an imbalance between your income and skill level. Whatever the gap, it’s time to align yourself with your life’s work and aim for the bullseye. With the North Node in your first house, this could be a time when you receive a reward or recognition for efforts made in the past.

Taurus
April 20-May 20

In your ninth house of higher education, personal philosophy and long-distance travel, this new moon stokes a desire for adventure and novelty, dear Taurus. If you’ve been wanting to travel overseas or go back to school, now is the time to take the next step. Perhaps you’ve been too focused on the obstacles rather than on how to overcome them. And after further review, you may realize that you’re not as far away from taking the leap as you thought.

In terms of the nodal influence, you may experience a circumstance now that pushes you to connect with something much larger than the material world. It’s a connection with what is intangible that propels your growth.

Gemini
May 21–June 20

This new moon is happening in a highly transformative part of your sky, dear Gemini. The eighth house highlights areas related to shared resources, intimacy and power. This is a time to realize that you need not do everything alone. Investigate possible resources that could help you, such as acquiring a loan or scholarship. The key is to try something you haven’t tried before. The North Node influence further pushes you toward the benefit of collaborations and group efforts. Work to expand your network and connect with the whole of humanity. You may be surprised what others have on offer for you.

Cancer
June 21–July 22

In the sign opposite to yours, this new moon for you is all about relationships, dear Cancer. This could be a fresh start with someone you consider close. Or this could be the start of a new relationship. Others may meet someone at this time who has long-term potential and may feel have a Saturnian nature about them, a bit older, wise and serious.

The North Node in your 10th house is pushing you to concentrate efforts toward your legacy or career, which may require you to spend less time at home or with family. Some may receive recognition, a promotion, raise or award related to their career now.

Leo
July 23–August 22

A new moon in the sixth house is all about breaking habits, which makes this an opportune time to ditch what no longer serves you, dear Leo. If you attempted to implement a goal with the onset of the new year but it didn’t go as planned, consider this your second chance to make that goal a reality. The North Node in your ninth house is pulling you toward a paradigm shift. This could mean that you need to leave behind a long-held belief from childhood that was somehow misinformed. Allowing yourself to let go of outdated beliefs stimulates an adventurous spirit to seek new horizons that could lead to a wonderful surprise.

Virgo
Aug. 23–Sept. 22

Creative new beginnings are on the horizon, as this new moon activates your fifth house of self-expression, romance, joy and children, dear Virgo. This signals a time when your inner child bounds forward, and you may return to an old hobby with a refreshed spirit. The key word is play. Creative projects started now and nurtured are likely to see positive results in the next six months when a full moon in Capricorn occurs. A chance of meeting someone new or experiencing a renewal in a current relationship also is on offer.

In terms of the nodal influence, the North Node in your eighth house is trying to bring you a personal rebirth. This could indicate an uptick in emotional intensity, but rather than turning away from it, allow yourself to observe what is coming up for you. Blessings come in the form of psychological clearing.

Libra
Sept. 23–Oct. 22

This new moon is happening in a foundational part of your chart, signaling new beginnings related to family, home and your inner security, dear Libra. If you’ve been feeling out of touch with your roots or those you consider family, now is a time to reconnect and strengthen what you have. For others, this could be about your immediate environment or your dream home and taking the appropriate steps to align yourself with manifesting this desire.

With the North Node continuing to transit the sign opposite yours, you’re being called to invest in relationships, which could entail the need to stop trying to do everything on your own and taking a risk to rely on someone else.

Scorpio

This new moon lights up your third house, dear Scorpio, presenting fresh starts in communication, short-distance travel and perception. If you feel there’s been a continuous miscommunication with someone in your life, you may now find the words to say in a well-received way. A new mode of travel also is on offer.

In terms of the nodal influence, a circumstance may arrive that forces you to find a balance between your spiritual and practical sides. The North Node has been pushing you to prioritize your time and create better work and health habits. Resist the urge to engage in escapist behaviors. Blessings come now when you pour time into serving others.

Sagittarius
Nov. 22–Dec. 21

It’s time to take stock of your values, dear Sagittarius, as this new moon is happening in a part of your sky that rules money and self-worth. This is a powerful time to consider areas of life where you may be devaluing yourself and make a change. Is the money you’re making worth your time? Are you making yourself small in the presence of others? Focus on the value you bring to the table and don’t be afraid to show off your talents and be proud of what you have to offer.

As a part of this, the North Node in your fifth house has been pushing you to creatively express yourself and prioritize things in life that bring you joy. Utilize this creative energy through experimentation and tapping into your inner child. In the process, you may discover something extraordinary.

With a collection of energy building in your sign alongside this new moon serves as your personal new year, dear Capricorn. This is about your physical body and identity, and seeds you plant now are likely to culminate over the next year. Take time leading up to the new moon to reflect on major goals you’d like to achieve and the steps it will take to get there. This is not about overnight change; this is about change that takes time to establish.

With the nodal influence activating your fourth house of home and family, you’re being asked to nurture your home and internal environment. As a sign that seeks achievement, you’re naturally inclined to escape into work. But it’s time now to consider your emotional patterns and work to break any that are holding you back.

Aquarius
Jan. 20–Feb. 18

In your 12th house of subconscious patterns, dreams and imagination, this new moon is likely to feel especially insightful, dear Aquarius. If you’ve been reticent to change or stuck in old ways of thinking, this is a time to step outside of your comfort zone and consider the relationship between your reality and thought process. Journaling, meditating and going to therapy are highly favored at this time.

In terms of the nodal influence, the North Node in your third house has been pushing you to develop how you communicate. Resist the temptation to escape into your own convictions, as this can inhibit understanding. Try to be more observant and open to others around you.
