LuAnn Smith passed away at the age of 81, on Jan. 10, 2024. She resided at the Sterling Court assisted living in St. George, Utah.
LuAnn grew up in Southern California. She was born in Santa Monica. At the age of 5, the family moved to an unincorporated area of Inglewood, close to the Los Angeles International Airport. She went from elementary school through junior college, living in the same home. She attended Cal State Berkeley, majoring in zoology.
LuAnn taught science in the Los Angeles area for 35 years. She took time out from teaching at Marshall High School to serve a 1 1/2 yr mission to Southern Brazil for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon her return, she eventually transferred from teaching again at Marshall High School to Eagle Rock High School. She settled into teaching chemistry.
LuAnn was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed family history and genealogy. She served two more missions for the church in the Family History Library.
LuAnn had numerous interests. She was active in the Girl Scouts through high school, so she could canoe and kayak. She also joined a canoe club. She backpacked and snow skied with the Sierra Club. She traveled Europe in a Volkswagen Bug with a friend for two months. She traveled to Brazil as well, several years after her mission.
LuAnn is survived by her brother Paul (Janette), nephew Jeffrey and niece Jana, sister Joy and niece Jennifer.
Family was very important to LuAnn and she loved her grand nephews and grand nieces as well.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Rachael Chapel in Santa Clara, Utah.
Viewing will be held prior to funeral services from 12:30- 1:45 p.m.
