WASHINGTON CITY — Pedestrians will not be able to use the tunnel under Interstate 15 at The Boilers Park, beginning as early as Monday, Nov. 27.

Construction crews will be working to extend the pedestrian underpass to accommodate a new exit ramp, to be named Exit 11, on Main Street in Washington City, according to an email sent to residents from the I-15 Washington Public Involvement Team.

Boilers Park, however, will remain open and accessible from Buena Vista Boulevard, but the tunnel will be closed through early next year, the email said.

As work progresses on the I-15/Exit 11 project, residents and travelers should expect increased noise, dust and vibration. Work will be done primarily Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Main Street underpass remains closed as crews continue to work on what will be the Exit 11 interchange. Main Street is open to local traffic only and can be accessed from Telegraph Street, Buena Vista Boulevard and Washington Parkway.

In spring 2023, the Utah Department of Transportation began construction on I-15 between Green Spring Drive (Exit 10) and Washington Parkway (Exit 13). Expected improvements include:

Widening I-15 to include an additional travel lane in each direction.
Constructing a new interchange at Main Street (new Exit 11).
Implementing intersection improvements at Buena Vista Boulevard and Main Street.

“This project will improve safety and mobility throughout Washington County by providing additional connections from I-15 to the rapidly growing northeast areas of Washington and the downtown area,” according to UDOT.

The project completion date is anticipated to be summer 2024, and as work continues, UDOT reminds drivers to expect occasional traffic shifts, detours and lane closures, traffic delays on I-15 and closure of Main Street at I-15 until early 2024.
