ST. GEORGE — A three-vehicle crash on 3000 East near the Red Cliffs Utah Temple made an evening commute take a little longer for drivers passing through the area.

Police say a triple-vehicle collision at the at the intersection of 3000 East and George Washington Boulevard near the Red Cliffs Utah Temple was the result of a driver making a left into oncoming traffic, St. George, Utah, Feb. 16, 2024 | Photo by Mori Kessler, St. George News

The triple-collision happened around 7 p.m. when the driver of a white Mercedes passenger car that was originally eastbound on George Washington Boulevard (1450 East) started to make a left turn onto northbound 3000 East and collided with a westbound pickup truck going straight through the intersection, St. George Police Office James Schafer said at the scene.

The impact from the Mercedes resulted in the front of the pickup spinning around and smacking a nearby SUV, the officer added. The SUV sustained minor damage while the damage to the pickup truck and Mercedes was more “significant.”

While the driver of the SUV was able to park alongside the road nearby, the pickup and Mercedes were stuck in the northwest corner of the intersection until eventually being removed by responding tow trucks.

Only minor injuries were reported in relation to the crash, Schafer said, adding the people involved “were lucky.”

Though no citations had been issued at the time, Schafer said the driver of the Mercedes would likely be cited for failing to yield to oncoming traffic.

Traffic in the immediate area slowed somewhat as motorists moved around the crash scene.

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
