The Blue Butterfly House, known for distributing books to elementary schools locally and abroad, will be the beneficiary of all proceeds from the drive.

The event runs from January 29 to mid-February, organizers said.

Cynthia Vo, one of the vice presidents of the club, sees this as an opportunity to encourage children to read. As the new generation becomes increasingly reliant on technology, they learn less from books.

“We visit the elementary schools during our class periods,” she said. :I feel like a lot of kids are kind of really dependent on their Chromebooks. And it’s kind of scary.”

During a planning week, students mapped out their strategy for the upcoming weeks that will see them promoting the event through flyers, word-of-mouth and a video announcement at the school.

The student’s goal is not just to collect books but to turn this into a community-wide effort, targeting places where parents would see the advertising, such as yoga studios, coffee shops and news media outlets.

Approximately 30 students are currently involved in the project, representing a diverse group of students from freshmen to seniors.

What makes this book drive unique is that it’s taking plae without much faculty intervention. Paul Hill, who teaches business law at Snow Canyon High School, leads the students in a non-traditional teaching approach, allowing them to take on leadership roles and become accountable for the success of their initiatives.

Vo asks that the community come together and donate books of any kind. Novels and self-help books, even up to middle school level, are welcome contributions.

For those who wish to donate, items can be dropped off at the Snow Canyon High School main office located at 1385 Warrior Way in St. George. For more information about Latino’s in Action, contact Snow Canyon High School at 435-634-1967.
