Beaver Dam/Littlefield Fire Chief Jeff Hunt confirmed to St. George News that the semi was heading southbound, went off the highway and rolled to a stop in deep sand and dirt at about mile marker 1 of I-15 near the Old Dixie Highway 91 exit.
“It’s hard to say for sure how it happened,” Hunt said. “After a medical incident to the driver, the truck drifted off the freeway onto the shoulder.”
The truck sank into the sand and dirt to its axles, leaving the vehicle stuck by the side of the road and remaining there as of 8 p.m.Wednesday.
“The truck took out a sign and the drive train just got tore apart,” said Hunt, adding that since the truck stopped on the shoulder off the freeway, traffic in both directions of I-15 went on unimpeded.
The driver was transported to the hospital after Hunt said CPR and emergency procedures were initiated immediately after responding personnel arrived on scene.
“They got his blood pressure up and he was breathing on his own,” Hunt said, adding that he had no other details on the driver’s condition after he was taken from the scene.
No other injuries were reported.
This report is based on statements by law enforcement personnel and may not include the full scope of the findings.
