ST. GEORGE — Both basketball teams at Utah Tech University will joust with the Lancers on Wednesday in critical Western Athletic Conference matchups.

The men take on Cal Baptist in Riverside, California, at 8 p.m. (MT). Meanwhile, in St. George, Utah Tech’s women (5-2, 1-0 WAC) will tip off against the Lancers at Burns Arena Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Trailblazer men (4-3, 1-0 WAC) are fresh off a home win over Utah Valley while the Lancers are 6-1, 1-0 WAC after a 25-point win over Southern Utah in Cedar City a week ago.

Utah Tech coach Jon Judkins’ starting lineup of Beon Riley, Noah Gonsalves, Aric Demings, Tanner Christensen and Jaylen Searles is forming up nicely.

Gonsalves scored 18 points to lead the win over UVU while Riley chipped in with 17. Christensen threw in 10 and Searles snagged a season-high 10 rebounds.

Cal Baptist will counter with leading scorer Dominique Daniels Jr., who averages 16.3 points per contest. He is one of four Lancers to average double-digit scoring.

On the women’s side, this is a critical matchup early in the WAC season as Cal Baptist was picked to finish third in the conference and Utah Tech was picked behind them in fourth, according to a preseason coaches poll.

Both teams are chasing preseason No. 1 Grand Canyon, which is off to a 2-0 WAC start and 6-2 overall.

Utah Tech’s standout senior Breaunna Gillen, the WAC preseason Player of the Year, will have a chance to make some history Wednesday night.

At 1,201 career points, Gillen needs to net just 12 more points to break the Utah Tech all-time scoring record by Johnna Brown, who threw in 1,212 points in her four-year career.

But the Lancers will have a lot to say about that, particularly senior guard Chloe Webb.

Webb leads the WAC in scoring (21.0 points per game) and is second in rebounding with 8.83 boards per game for the Lancers.

After Wednesday’s games versus Cal Baptist, both Utah Tech squads will host contests in Burns Arena Saturday, Dec. 9.

The women play at 2 p.m. against Weber State and the men tip off against Idaho at 7 p.m.
